Writing Prompts for Personal Growth

A one-eyed dog jumps over a fallen branch

Writing things down is an effective way to process emotions and understand where you might be getting stuck. I don’t care if you are a terrible writer, if your handwriting is illegible and your grammar is questionable. If you find yourself writing below your standards, lower your standards. No one else ever needs to read what you write. Set a timer for five, ten, twenty minutes — whatever feels reasonable, and free write with zero judgment.

Writing prompts:

  • When you look back, are there moments in your life that didn’t work out, but actually ended up being better? Relationships that ended, jobs you didn’t get?

  • What is your biggest regret? Write a letter of forgiveness to yourself.

  • If you are reeling from a loss of something, can you imagine how it might put you on a path to something better? Can you reframe it as Another Fucking Growth Opportunity? Write out what that path might look like, even if it feels wildly unlikely.

  • When you are in a difficult moment, what are the ten things you most want to remember? Write those down, either in bullet form, or expand on them as much as you would like.

  • Set an intention for yourself for three months from now, one year from now, and three years from now. This is not a goal, this is not about making a certain amount of money, or losing a certain amount of weight. It’s about how you would like to feel, regardless of external circumstances.

About this Photo
This is our dog, Grace, who passed away in 2017. We adopted her when she was a “senior.” At some point, she began having eye problems, so we had to have her eye removed. It never bothered her, and even after the surgery, she was an enthusiastic hiker.
